Traded Units

Traded units, the outer cases for consumer units can be bar coded with EAN-13, UPC-A, ITF14 or UCC EAN-128 Symbols.  Only one label is required, and this should ideally be positioned on one long side, making sure that the bars are upright when the traded unit is stored in the normal position.

  • The target X-dimension is 0.50mm whatever symbology is used.

  • The bars should be at least 32mm tall.

  • The light margin to the left and right should be at least 6mm.

Printing EAN-13 or UPC-A Barcodes

  • The x-dimension of 0.50mm is equal to a magnification of approximately 150% for EAN-13 and UPC-A barcodes.

  • The Light margins are vital.

  • The width acorss the bars at this target size should be at least 47.75mm.

Printing ITF-14 Barcodes

  • The Target (and minimum size) is an x-dmiension of 0.50mm, which is equal to a magnification of approximately 50%.

  • The width across the abrs at this tartget size should be just over 60mm, and the light margin each side should be at least 6mm.

  • The bars should be at least 32 mm tall.

  • You must include horizontal check bars at the top and bottom of each code to prevent short scans.

Printing UCC/EAN-128 Barcodes

  • The Target (and minimum size) is an x-dmiension of 0.50mm, which is equal to a magnification of approximately 50%.

  • Check that the function 1 character is always part of the barcode.  An enlarged section of the first part of a UCC/EAN-128 barcode here shows the Function 1 character more clearly.

  • The bars should be at least 32 mm tall.

  • If the x-dimension is 0.50mm, the width of a bar encoding and a best before or use by date will be 89mm across the bars, plus 5mm each side for the light margins.

  • In practice always allow at least 8mm each side for light margins to allow for changes in the label position as it goes through printer.

  • Remember that the brackets around the application identifiers (the numbers 01 and 17 in the example above) must not be encoded in the UCC/EAN-128 barcode.
